Among the universities in South Carolina the University of South Carolina is the most important. Founded in 1801 this is a public, comprehensive, co-educational research university located in Colombia, South Carolina. The institutions's campus is located on over 359 acres of land in the urban core of Downtown Columbia. Prior to the civil war, the University of South Carolina or USC was known as South Carolina college.
