Transportation in Myrtle Beach,, South Carolina

The US Route 17, the first major route into the Myrtle Beach area, runs from the border of North Carolina till the Myrtle Beach area and from there turns towards west and north into Conway. In the year 1933 the road was named so and US 17 was extended into South Carolina a year later. This road was named again as US 501 in a much complex route following modern Broadway Street, Highway 15, Seaboard street, Grissom Pkwy, Highway 544, and Business US 501.

The US 501 route that exists at present was created following a direct path from Aynor, South Carolina into Myrtle Beach. In the year 1960 the modern four lane road was built covering the increasing traffic towards the Myrtle Beach. Since then little development has occurred in the new part of US 501. In the year 1962 a bridge over the intercostals waterway was built the surroundings of this bridge has recently modified this development has also seen along the waterway.

Again during the 1970s a bypass that roughly passed a dirt road was created as bypass traffic for US17. The actual route was named as South Carolina Highway 317. This route was opened in 1975 allowing the traffic to bypass kings Highway beginning from the northern city limits and proceeding towards the US 501. This road construction was fully completed by the late 1980s and was included to the Murell's inlet its name was changed again into US17.

In the past decade the Myrtle Beach has witnessed immense developments many new roads have been constructed. Some of the roads included have either been funded through RIDE I funding or through the City of Myrtle Beach
