Charlestown is a city located in the Charlestown County with many areas which are located in the boundaries of Berkely County and Dorchester County in South Carolina of United States. Charlestown also serves as the county seat and is the largest city of Charlestown county. There are five separate areas located in the proper city of Charlestown these include the downtown peninsula, West Ashley, John Island, Daniel Island and the Cainhoy Peninsula. The city was originally named as Charles Towne and was found in the year 1670. it got its present location in 1680. The name we call today was adopted by it in the year 1783.

Charlestown is known as the Holy City because the city had many churches on the low rise cityscape, especially the several steeples. According to the census report brought out in the year 2006, the estimated population of the proper city was about 107,845. This made the city the second most populous city in South Carolina. Charlestown is considered as the fastest growing city in South Carolina.

Charlestown is famous tourist destination with many site attractions. The city is also an important port and is the second most productive port in the world after Hong Kong. The city has a mayor council government with a strong mayor. The mayor is considered as the chief administrator and the executive officer of the municipality
